  • What is Starling Minds?

    Built by leading psychologists who specialize in cognitive behavioural therapy, Starling’s online platform delivers effective and evidence-based exercises, training, and education to support you on your mental health. To date, over 10, 000 people have used Starling to build their mental resilience wherein 77% reporting improved mental health symptoms. Starling Minds has two programs. The Mental Fitness Program is designed to help you prevent mental illness and strengthen your resilience to stress, anxiety, and depression. The Return-to-Health Program is designed to support those who are off of work due to physical or mental illness.

  • What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and how effective is it?

    CBT is a form of evidence-based treatment that helps people understand how their thoughts, behaviours, and physiology affect how they feel. CBT views mental health management as a skill that can be learned, improved and strengthened similar to physical fitness. CBT teaches basic concepts about mental health and views training exercises as paramount to mastering skills that break negative behaviour patterns, regulate emotions, and balance thoughts. CBT is effective in treating anxiety and depressions for 50-75% of people who do not take medication, and 75-90% for those who do.

  • Is there proof that CBT works?

    Yes, CBT is considered to be the leading evidence-based form of treatment for many mental health issues including stress, anxiety, and depression. Thousands of studies have demonstrated its effectiveness and have been published in peer-reviewed medical, psychological, and academic journals. Many organizations including the National Institute of Mental Health and the Canadian/American/Australian Psychological/Psychiatric Associations view CBT as the ‘gold standard’ for psychological treatment.

  • Is online CBT just as effective as CBT delivered by a psychologist?

    Yes, rigorous academic research has found CBT delivered online to be just as effective as CBT delivered by a psychologist. Academic studies have proven that online CBT is effective in the treatment and management of various psychiatric disorders such as depression, GAD, social anxiety and more. Treatment adherence averages 82%.

  • How effective is Starling Minds?

    Starling Minds has been helping people become resilient to stress, anxiety, and depression since 2013. We’ve studied anonymized user data from 6,000 participants over 5 years and found that Starling helps 77% of people improve their mental health. This means that members move up the mental health continuum in at least one mental illness symptom category of anxiety, worry, and sadness. Additionally, for members with improved symptoms, added productive work time increases on average by 4.3 hours per month.

  • Who uses Starling Minds?

    Starling Minds is currently used by employees and family members who work for organizations that have purchased a subscription. Starling was first designed for teachers, principals, and vice-principals to help them manage their mental health. That was back in 2013 and today, Starling has grown to serve people from all professional backgrounds including those who are on disability due to physical or mental illness.

  • Who does Starling Minds Help?

    Starling Minds helps those who are struggling with their mental health and those who seek to build skills to help them prevent mental illness. Starling also helps those who are on disability for physical or mental illness.

  • How might Starling Minds help me?

    Starling makes it easy to learn and integrate evidence-based practices that decrease symptoms related to stress, anxiety, and depression. If you are currently struggling with your mental health, Starling will help you get back on track. If are experiencing an increase in life stressors, Starling helps keep your mental health in check. If you are doing well and want to learn new skills to help you improve your mental fitness, Starling has you covered! If you are off of work and/or ready to return, Starling will help get you there and prepare you for a successful return-to-work.

  • When did Starling Minds first become available?

    Developed by a leading CBT psychologist, Starling Minds was first launched in 2013. The program was designed to help members improve their mental health and become more resilient to everyday life stressors. It was also used as a support tool for those on disability.

  • I’m on disability and have been offered Starling by my insurer. Will program usage affect my claim?

    Absolutely not. Your insurer is offering Starling to better support claimants who are struggling with their mental health or who are at risk of developing mental illness. We do not offer any information on individual claimant usage to your insurer. Your usage within Starling is kept strictly private and secure.

  • Will my activity within Starling Minds be shared with my case manager or vocational rehabilitation consultant?

    No. Your activity within Starling is kept strictly confidential. Your insurer has made Starling available to you so you have a 24/7 mental health support while you are on disability.

  • Are there resources I can read to learn more about the Return-to-Health Program?

  • I’m on disability and my insurer mentioned I have access to Starling Minds. How do I register for Starling Minds?

    Please contact your case manager or vocational rehabilitation consultant and ask to be enrolled in Starling Minds. You will need to specify if you are off of work due to physical injury or mental illness as there are two separate programs tailored to each. At this time, those who are being offered Starling through their insurer cannot register on their own.

  • I already have a referral to a psychologist. Why should I use Starling Minds?

    Many people use Starling in addition to seeing a psychologist. Starling provides in-depth training on the cognitive-behavioural skills offered by CBT psychologists. Your use of Starling will further solidify the knowledge you gain from therapy sessions. Additionally, there are tools you can use in Starling to support your progress that you will not receive from psychologists.

  • Can I use this program while taking medication or seeing a psychiatrist?

    Yes – Starling Minds is an educational program that is based in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and can be used alongside medication and/or therapy.

  • I’m in too much distress. What if I feel I cannot use Starling Minds right now?

    Please do not put any added pressure on yourself if you feel Starling might add to your distress. Our programs are designed to make it easy for you to learn how to better manage stress, anxiety, and depression. We encourage you to give it a try when you feel the time is right.

  • Is Starling Minds private and secure?

    We are diligently committed to keeping all member information confidential. Each user is given an anonymous ID number that only they know so they can privately interact with the Starling Community. Organizations receive status reports that include the aggregate mental health improvement of those in their organization who use Starling. The organization never receives information on individual members.

  • Can anyone see what I enter in Starling Minds?

    No. Your personal information is encrypted so whatever you enter cannot be traced back to you. When you register, you can review the terms and conditions for your organization.

  • What does Starling do with my personal information and my activity?

    We track anonymized member assessment data to better understand the efficacy of our programs. We do this so we can continually provide more meaningful mental health support to you. As a reminder, your personal information and activity are kept strictly confidential.

  • How do I delete my data?

    Please email our member services team at members@starlingminds.com. We’ll be able to process your request faster if you include your Member ID and the email associated with your account.

  • Where do I register and/or sign in to Starling Minds?

    Please visit app.starlingminds.com to either login or register for Starling Minds. At the top right-hand side of the page, you can toggle between the registration and sign in page.

  • I have forgotten my password. How do I reset it?

    Please visit Starling’s login page at app.starlingminds.com. Below the submit button you will see a link that reads, ‘Forgot your password?’. Click to reset your password.

  • How long does it take to complete the Starling Minds program?

    Each session in Starling takes roughly 10-15 minutes to complete. Depending on the number of sessions in your program and how many sessions you complete in a week, it can take anywhere from one to six weeks to complete the program.

  • Is there a deadline I must complete the program by?

    There is no deadline. Please feel free to complete the program at whatever pace works best for you. Some people speed through the content in a few days, while others space it out over the course of a month.

  • What happens when I complete the program?

    When you complete the last session you will be transferred into a self-paced version of Starling.  Here you will have access to a library of modules so you can continue to work on your mental fitness for life. This part of Starling Minds is also available for your family members. Please use the referral form under your Member ID drop-down to refer family members or colleagues. 

  • Who do I contact for member support or if I have additional questions and what are your support hours?

    Please feel free to email our member services team at members@starlingminds.com at any time. We will respond within our customer support hours which are between 8am-8pm EST, Monday-Friday.

  • What are the symptoms of depression?

    Depression is a mental health condition where people experience a decline in their mood, motivation, and engagement in life. It can be accompanied by significant changes in appetite, sleep problems, concentration problems, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, or suicidal thoughts or attempts. A diagnosis of depression is warranted if a person has experience a sufficient number of symptoms for a set amount of time and a clear decline in at least one area of real-world functioning (i.e. emotional, occupational, relationships, household, finances, personal grooming, or hobbies).

  • What are the symptoms of anxiety?

    There are many different types of anxiety including panic attacks, social anxiety, and generalized anxiety. The most common is generalized anxiety, which occurs when people worry excessively and are unable to control it. Typically, people with generalized anxiety have difficulties delegating tasks to others, look for a lot of information, become indecisive, look for reassurance, overprotect others, and procrastinate. Similar to a diagnosis of depression, there must be a sufficient number of symptoms and a decline in functioning for a set amount of time in order to warrant a diagnosis.
